A black complexion paper mache clown with wooden block torso, lower arms and legs, is posed seated on the top rung of a wooden chair, holding two balls. When the lever at the side is pushed down, the clown appears to leap up in the air in a humorous manner. All firm-composition, socket head with sculpted hair in short side-parted bobbed fashion, painted blue eyes, fringed lashes, one-stroke brows, rounded nose, closed mouth with row of tiny painted teeth, slightly-smiling expression with impressed dimples at corners of lips, five-piece body. Fair/good condition, touch-up back crown of hair, left hand repainted, finish on legs worn. Jessie McCutcheon Raleigh, her doll company was highly touted when her first dolls appeared. They were made for four years only,1916-1920, making them quite rare today.
